Moldmakers on the Move
This year is continuing to be a busy one for North American mold manufacturers, which is shining a brighter light on the need for skilled mold builders and our current lack of a skilled workforce. Moldmakers are in demand as evidenced by shops connecting with MMT to see if we can help.
One such shop is M.R. Mold & Engineering of Brea, CA, who I met with while out at MD&M/Plastec West last month. Business for them started out slower than expected this year with a number of secured projects being put on hold, but with the release of 2014 budgets, MD&M West and other industry events, quoting and purchase orders have picked up quite a bit in February and early March.
M.R. Mold is becoming more and more involved with major medical and consumer OEMs, which is bringing larger projects to its door. This is forcing them to hire new moldmakers. They are seraching for mold builders with a minimum of 10 years of experience in moldmaking, as well as experience with tight tolerance tooling. Mastercam experience is a plus, but not required. Another avenue to finding qualified mold builders is our annual amerimold expo this June 11-12 in Novi, MI. It features exhibitors displaying products used for designing, machining, repairing and processing molds (including machine tools, cutting tools, CAD/CAM, 3D printers, mold components, materials), but it also showcasing those providing moldmaking services too. Plus plenty of moldmakers are walking the show floor.
